Wandering, exploring, discovering...

The Ultimate WA Road trip

Western Australia had been on my buckelist for Australia for a long time.

It’s more or less the only part of the country I haven’t visited since I’ve been an adult.

Having just moved back to the country, I decided it was high time I got over to the west coast to see what WA is all about.

During the research phase I discovered visiting the entire state was too much to do in one trip and so I decided to break it into two, “smaller” road trips.

The Ultimate WA Road Trip – Part 1: Broome to Perth

For part one – which we did in May 2022 – we flew to Broome and drove down to Perth.

We hit up Port Hedland before heading inland to Karijini National Park for a few days.

We then went west again, back to the coast to check out Coral Bay and Exmouth to visit Ningaloo Reef and swim with the majestic whale sharks.

Continuing south we hit up Carnarvon on the way to Denham.

In Denham we had an early morning trip to Monkey Mia to see the dolphins.

We had a look through Kalbarri National Park on the way to Geraldton before continuing to Jurien Bay to swim with the sealions.

Finally, we stopped into the see the Pinnacles on our way into Perth.

To round off the trip we took a day trip to a windy Rottnest Island.

All in all our epic trip was 15 days and we covered a cool 4,500 kilometres.

The Ultimate WA Road Trip – Part: Southern Coast

For our second trip to Western Australia, we had a little more than two weeks.

During that time we managed a couple of days relaxing in Perth and exploring some of the west coast’s beautiful beaches.

Then we head off, beginning our tour of the state’s south.

We managed to drive the 600 odd kilometres from Perth to Kalgoorli before heading south to the coast.

We stayed in Esperance for a few days, using the coastal town as a base to explore Cape Le Grand and a few of the beautiful beaches in the region.

After that we hit the road Wast, en route to Hopetoun.

Hopetoun was basically just somewhere to stop before taking a day trip north to explore Wave Rock and Lake Magic.

We spent a good few hours battling the rain, wind and fog to scale Bluff Knoll before heading back to the coast to Bremer Bay.

We hopped on a Whale Watching boat to try to spot some Orcas before continuing further west to Albany.

Another day, another hike – this time to Castle Rock, before checking out a couple more of the coast’s beautiful beaches.

We managed a walk out to Peak head before continuing on our way to Augusta.
